Version 1.3 is released and no longer in beta. I use it on Edgy, with
a USB headset, and haven't encountered any problems yet. Admittedly, I
don't use it very much, but I have made multiple calls in the same
session successfully.
I suspect, though, that the original poster has version 1.3 (that's
what you've been offered when you download from Skype for at least the
last week or so), so the issue may still exist on some hardware.
