Files from camcorder to folder

OK Duncan, this is what I have done. Switched on the camcorder, set USB
to streaming, and then connected the camcorder to the computer using the
USB cable supplied. After waiting about a minute there was no sign of
activity on the computer monitor. After disconnecting the USB lead I set
the camcorder to Play/Edit and again plugged in the USB lead. Still no
obvious sign of activity.

All I want to do is transfer or copy the recording on my camcorder tape
to the computer. I can copy pictures from my digital camera to the
computer simply by joining them together using a USB connection why can
I not do the same with my camcorder?
