I thought it was slightly too good to be true, and it turns out htere is
a catch: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xcompmgr/+bug/65874
xcompmgr causes the X server to leak memory.  800 megs in one day.
Luckily there's a workaround: kill and restart xcompmgr, and the X
server's memory usage goes down.
