Default Resolution on new (edgy) install

I just installed Edgy on some spare space to make sure everything
worked well before upgrading.  The first thing I notice is that the
display is only run at 1024x768 instead of the 1280x1024 that my
monitor and card are capable of.  Looking in the Screen Resolution
Preferences dialog I don't get 1280x1024 as an option.

Now I know I can go through and hand edit the "Screen" Section of
/etc/X11/xorg.conf but this doesn't seem to fit with user-friendly
Ubuntu.  Did I perhaps miss something in the installation procedure?
Is there a dialog that I'm missing to enable the higher resolution?
Or are users just expected to know how to change this?
