Yes, we discovered that ipods formatted with the HFS+ filesystem with
journalling enabled are mounted read-only by linux, which means no
apps can possibly write to them. We fixed it by turning off HFS+
journaling using OS X. See the bug report I linked to earlier.

It was also suggested in this thread that if the first time you turn
on your ipod it's connected to a Windows XP computer it will format
the filesystem as fat32, if it's OS X it'll format it to HFS+ with
journaling. Perhaps Ubuntu should install ipodlinux? :)
