Actually I think it would be a lot more useful to just have an encrypted 
  drive or folder, which can hold any kind of file, not just notes. 
Because you will end up with files that aren't plain text that you need 
to protect.  Then it's easier to just move sensitive files of any kind 
in there.

On Windows, a good open source program for this is TrueCrypt.  I think a 
  Linux version is available but I don't think it has a graphical user 
interface.  Google it.. :)  The good thing is that both Windows and 
Linux can open the same encrypted drive/file/folder.
