It was just me being daft in the end.
When I put the hard drive in, I swapped the connection with the DVD drive.
My fstab was saying that /dev/hda was a cdrom, whereas actually /dev/hda was
a hard disk, and /dev/hdc was the DVD. No wonder the computer got confused!
