iPod and generic mp3 player support in Edgy and Dapper

It seems we ran afoul of this bug:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/49052

The Dapper kernel has no support for the journalling option of the
iPods HFS+ filesystem. In order for any application to be able to
write to iPods in Linux (at least with the Dapper kernel) journalling
must be turned off on the iPod, which as far as we know can only be
achieved with OS X.

Once journalling is off, the combination of Rhythmbox (play files from
iPod) and GTKPod (moves files to/from iPod) works well in Dapper, at
least with the ipod we tested. This is what we'll recommend to people
with Dapper. Banshee seems to be buggy -- displays the name of the
ipod wrong, and we found the UI least intuitive. We did not try
Amarok.

Still, I'm interested to know what the state of ipod support is in
edgy, and also how the generic mp3 player support in rhythmbox works
in dapper and edgy, particularly will it convert oggs to mp3?
