I see the directories in a terminal as a user or as root (i.e. ls -all
lists directories as you'd expect). But when I open Nautilus or
Konqueror and navigate to the top of the directory tree ("/") I only
see two directories ("home" and "media").

This also affects file save and open dialogs. Nothing outside of "media"
and "home" (and their subfolders) shows up. But if I type the path in
(thank god GNOME *finally* figured that's a user friendly feature) I
can get to the directory (although it often causes a hang in KDE).

Well as I stated previously they appear normally in a terminal as a user
or as root. That's why I'm baffeled by this.
