Edgy - "Missing" Directories

I'm not sure what's happened (I suspect I've inadvertently changed a
setting somewhere  --  but then...maybe not) but when I open Nautilus
and move to the top of the directory tree, I only see two directories.
Those being "home" and "media".

Everything else is missing.  I have the same problem in KDE with
Konqueror.

It also affects file open/save dialogs in both Nautilus and Konqueror.

I have to manually type in the path  I want in order to open it.  And
often times if it's from a file open/save dialog that doesn't work or
causes a hang.

Everything is perfectly normal in a terminal (thankfully).

Is anyone else experiencing this and/or any ideas as to what might be
the problem?
