broken deps and other errors block apt-get and synaptic

I got during Kubuntu 6.06 install and get trying to add packages several kinds of errors. Install failure forced me to trash a motherboard and CPU after trying for over a day to figure out what the problem was. Replacement
with similar old i440BX and PII CPU let the installer finish, but not without errors. After it eventually finished, I was able to get everything up to date without more errors. Everything that had been installed originally
or that I added seemed to be OK. Then I tried to apt-get edubuntu-desktop. Between apt-get and synaptic, I get a lot of various packaging errors. The last attempt output from apt-get follows:
# apt-get -f install

I fetched all those listed packages again with apt-get source, but that didn't help. Are the mirrors' contents corrupted? Can anyone tell me how to get out of this without yet another fresh install?
TIA
