That's an understatement :) I think I would have said "apparently
impossible" ;-)

OK - to continue the "highly non-obvious" theme.... it might be possible
to set up a protocol handler in about:config
You right click and add a "boolean" entry of the form
network.protocol-handler.external.pdf user set boolean true
and a string
network.protocol-handler.app.pdf
with string value /path/to/acroread
( or plugin I assume : I don't use acroread, so you're on your own )
