Yes, we are on the same page. Try it - can you add a new item to the
list displayed? If you can, please tell me how, click by click, because
if it IS possible, it is highly non-obvious to me.

During my experimentation I change the setting for PDF from "use this
plugin/AcroRead 7.0" to "run this program/acroread", and now PDF is not
in the list any more - and I have no way to add it.

The choices I get are download and open with. That's it. No plugins on
offer.
