Nvidia driver version mis-match keeps X from running

I was having problems on debian sid after a recent upgrade but spotted
this on debian-user:

I had to dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg because I'd been playing around
trying to fix the problem orginally but other than that, it worked for
me.
