I have heard that one really should wait several weeks before upgrading
to a new Ubuntu release (for stability). It seems prudent when
installing a new version to reserve an empty partition (or add a disk)
large enough to contain a minimal old version with its non-home data
then copy config data.
I have been away from Linux for several years so I do not know specifics
here. Please comment how to determine the size of such a partition and
what data should be copied. I am concerned about format differences
between releases.
