I also experienced problems with hibernate on edgy. Given that it
didn't work out-of-the-box, I tried the uswsusp package (user-space
software suspend), but that didn't help. The s2disk binary shipped in
the uswsusp package segfaults! See <https://launchpad.net/bugs/69715>.
I finally went back to swsusp2, which currently is neither in the
official kernel nor in the Ubuntu kernel. swsusp2 comes as a kernel
patch, and it works just great on my PC. If you want to give swsusp2 a
try, tell me, I'll write a procedure to have it on edgy.
