Ubuntu & OS X shared partition

I just got a MacBook and am looking forward to putting Ubuntu on it
alongside OS X (I'm already going through Linux withdrawal). I don't
want to give up half my hard drive at any given time, so I would like
to have a very large partition shared between Ubuntu & OS X (maybe
/home--I haven't decided)? Has anyone done this? Is either ext2/3 or
HFS+ suitable for this? Which works better--HFS+ under Ubuntu, or
ext2/3 under OS X?
Thanks
Zach C.
