  I figured out part of the problem here: my /dev/input/js* devices
are getting renumbered somewhere along the line.  Most games and
emulators expect a /dev/input/js0, for instance, and when the
renumbering happens js0 is not used.

  Note: I am NOT using a USB hub.  I connect the joypads to the first
USB connectors on the motherboard shield.
