Yes using Update Manager to *U*pgrade your *D*istribution.  When I said
"dist-upgrade" I meant upgrading the distribution with the Update Manager.

But then either way it's the same.  If you don't have the metapackages
installed when trying to upgrade from say Dapper to Edgy, you'll run
into problems.

I don't see why. It's worked quite well for me.  Not too many hours
before I wrote this, the above command netted me upgrades to several
xorg related packages.

The original post wasn't about upgrading. It was about simply adding
Kubuntu and Xubuntu to an existing Ubuntu installation.
