I don't see what the big deal is and I see no reason for you to hold
off. BTW, you can also install WindowMaker, GNUStep, Fluxbox, Blackbox,
icewm, fvwm... on (K)(X)(U)buntu as well.
I like both GNOME and KDE so I use both. I've always used both. I've
been using both for years. Starting with Mandrake, Then RedHat, SUSE,
Fedora Core, Debian and and now Ubuntu. No harm has come to any of my
systems as a result. Heck KDE and GNOME even work together (via
freedesktop.org) on standards so they can co-exist more peacefully.
It's a very common setup.
And there's nothing that says you have to "install kubuntu". or
"install xubuntu" (e.g. $ sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
kubuntu-desktop). You can simply install xfce and KDE sans X/Kubuntu
branding as well. In fact a lot of XFCE/KDE veterans of both might
prefer that since they might not like the customizations that come with
X/Kubuntu. I rather like what the Xubuntu team has done with XFCE. But
I'm not that thrilled with some of what the Kubuntu team has done.
But I digress...
I see no reason for you not to add all the desktop environments and
window managers you want. Most of them are in the Ubuntu repository.
All of the ones I've mentioned are for sure.
