With an internet connection already in Ubuntu:

from the Ubuntu menu system:

System
Administration
Synaptic Package Manager
(password)
(then, use Search for 'kubuntu')
(Choose) kubuntu-desktop
Apply
(a number of packages will be downloaded. Mine took about 20 minutes
at 130kB/sec)

After the packages have all been downloaded, you are asked to choose
which 'default' you want in future:
KDM (kde) or
GDM (gnome)
I believe this can be changed later, and it is also easy to choose
each time a session is started at login.

Shutdown, end session ie 'Log Out' (there is no need to reboot)
At new logon, also choose Session KDE (you now have a choice with
Gnome also) by using the
Options (at bottom of screen at the left side)

Enjoy!
