Hi,
AFAIK if you are going to be using software raid then /boot will have to
be mounted as a seperate primary parition, the kernel and modules are
loaded from here, which then allows for access to your array (same with
LVM) and it seems you discovered this yourself.
Which disc are you using? For a fileserver you shouldn't be using
anything other than the alternate install disc as this disc has support
for raid, lvm and doesn't require you to install a window manager.
