I'm not sure why nautilus (the gnome desktop) would hang for you. You 
can kill nautilus in a terminal, however, and it will automatically 
restart. You should file a bug about this on launchpad instead of 
reporting it here.

If you have Flash installed, then it is nearly certainly causing your 
Firefox crashes (see bug 14991 for more information and how to work 
around the bug). Otherwise, you should consider filing a bug, though it 
is quite possible that one has already been filed.
