What do you meen the Windows bo doesn't "see" the other systems? are you
testing via windows shares(smb)? because if so, you would need to
install samba and configure it first. same with ssh etc. By default, no
ports are open, so I don't know how you would "see" it from a windows
box, other than pinging it by IP etc.
as for the laptop not getting on your network, I, personally, always
install network-manager, and the gnome-applet for it right away, and use
that. I've always had mixed results joining networks with any form of
encryption (wep, wpa, or otherwise) with the gnome-network application.
If you try network-manager, it will seem much, much better. it will use
your wired when you have that plugged in, and use your wireless when you
don't. it will remember connections/passwords/passphrases, and can
connect to wep,wpa etc networks. just make sure
in /etc/networking/interfaces everything you want network-manager to use
is set to auto.
