No, none of those work. So far the only advice I've got about the mouse 
is to use things like
xmodmap -e 'keycode 96=Pointer_Button3'

But I can't get that to have any effect when I hit the function key. So 
although I'm very short of $$$ at the moment I'll probably have to shell 
out for a new mouse (a scroll wheel would be very nice). Still, as you 
say, there ought to be a solution. I just haven't hit on it yet.
