Kopete wont load buddy lists from AOL etc..

I only use Kopete with MSN but here is my guess:

That sounds like the behavior of kopete when you are OFFLINE. Are you sure
you logged in? 

File -> Set Status -> Online.

Kopete uses this IMHO very silly "set status" crap to log you in, instead of
a big "login" button...  I had problems with this when I started using it.
