Looks like an ACPI/BIOS issue.

Daniel,

        I assume from your last comment that you suspect a bug in the
kernel.  My operating system is not quite original.  When I got the modem
working the update utility informed me that 187 updates were available
(200+ MB).  That's impossible to download via a dial-up connection, so I
selected 11 of the smaller ones and downloaded them (about 2 MB).  Of
course, I can't tell you which ones they were.  Does the update utility
keep a record of installed updates?  If not, it seems to me that
searching for a bug under these conditions is about impossible.  

        But I do appreciate your help.  A Linux user in New Zealand
referred to you as a "sound Ubuntu sound man," and I see that you seem to
be responsible for all the bug fixes related to sound.  Because of my
lack of documentation, though, I'm afraid this case is not too promising.
