using an external keyboard

I have an external keyboard, and tried first with a cheap USB->PS2
thing, but nothing happened. I needed what is called an active USB to P2
cable instead, and now my keyboard works automatically whenever I plug
it in. It does not disable the keyboard on the laptop, so that still
works. 

I use edgy.
