He also suggested ipv6 might be the problem -- it was. Not that I
know what ipv6 is. Going into Firefox, entering about:config and
finding the line
network.dns.disableIPv6
changing the setting to true. Then Firefox works fine.
(Interestingly, on the MacOSX side, that line in Firefox is already
set true.)
He's also told me how to disable ipv6 globally so I'll do that too.
