   Hello.
   I am new to Linux, Ubuntu and this mailing list. Please be indulgent.
   I am trying to install Ubuntu on brand new Dell Latitude D620 and D820
bought in October. In this message I shall tell about my problems with the
D620 (Intel Core Duo, 1.83 GHz, 2GB RAM).
   Windows XP was already installed. I installed Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake)
following advice on the Ubuntu Wiki (dual boot) and

http://www.math.dartmouth.edu/~sarunas/D620F6.html
http://mcsp.wartburg.edu/figura/D620.html

and everything seemed fine. However, a week later as soon as one logged in
and clicked a menu the computer freezed; there were messages as the
following:

[17180140.408000] ata1: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/01 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ
0x3/13/00

every few seconds. Eventually they would stop, the computer would unfreeze
for a few moments, then freeze again with similar messages.
   This happens even when booting from the Dapper LiveCD instead of the hard
disk.
   Google gave me many messages about this but no solution.
   So I have tried Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy. Booting from the CD and selecting
"Start or install Ubuntu", I get the following messages:

[17179638.208000] hw_random: cannot enable RNG, aborting
* Activating swap... [ ok ]
mount: Function not implemented
* Checking file systems...
fsck 1.39 (29-May-2006)
[ ok ]
[1719652.708000] BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!

and the computer freezes.
   Again, Google has not given any solution.
   Could this be related to the SATA controller? Windows tell me it is as
follows:
Intel 8280 1GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller - 27C4.
   Thanks in advance for any help.
                                                     Guillermo Moreno-SocĂas
