'This' (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=913441&postcount=2)
should solve your problem. I see this often enough that I am surprised
why Ubuntu package maintainers would want to stick with a default that
frustrates a lot of users instead of the "just works" option.

See bugs '14774' (https://launchpad.net/products/gst/+bug/14774) and
'32067' (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/32067)
and the 'wiki' (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SettingUpSamba) for more
information. The method described in the wiki is more secure because it
shows you how you may add users that have access permissions on the
share. My "fix" will make your share public (no password is asked) and
therefore anybody on your LAN can access your share without
authentication.
