Ethernet Problems on Acer Laptop

ok, update: after doing an update on knetworkconf, which i suspected was
the problem, i can enable the ethernet card, but still no dhcp. the
thing is i have an acer aspire 5502, with kubuntu dapper flight 6 BUT
with all the updates, and everything works fine if i take the cable
from the travelmate and connect it here, so i'm guessing this is an
update issue. but, since i'm hardly an expert, i'm not sure what to
update, is it dhclient3, or what? what manages the dhcp connection?
sorry for the stupid question but it seems that's the only logical
difference between my aspire laptop and my boyfriend's travelmate...
thanks

edit: my boyfriend's travelmate is also running kubuntu dapper flight 6
but with no updates, since we cannot connect to the internet to retrieve
the updates...
