[more newbie ???] howto list installed programs on menus?

thank you for your reply. where might a newbie learn these
incantatory-loik commands?
sadly, however, pasting these suggestions produces a console screen's
worth of activity, [1] and several new listings. but no imagemagick
listing in any of the menu pull-downs. i checked them all, although i
would expect imagemagick, for instance, to show up on the graphic
pull-down. synaptic package manager v. definitely says imagemagick's
"installed"???
