how is suspend-to-disk supposed to work?

I tried 2.6.16.9, 1.6.16.16, and 1.6.17-rc4, all with similar results which
I don't have at hand at the moment.  I won't be able to work on this for
about a week unfortunately (I'll be going away) but would like to take it up
again when I get back.  Please keep me in mind as you're working on this and
I'll get back in touch when I return.  thanks,
