Thanks Derek, that is exactly my point.

I too have experienced problems with 'local' mirrors in the past.

Naturally we can't expect mirrors to last forever, especially with the
size and popularity of Ubuntu these days; but whoever maintains the
mirrors should be aware of these issues.

I've since found out that this mirror is also us.archive.ubuntu.com -
perhaps it's time to shop around for some more reliable ones. (perhaps
mirrors.kernel.org - they're always fast!)

If they're unreliable, they shouldn't be in the list.
