automount

gnome-volume-manager (running in the background) takes care of that. It
listens for devices being plugged (with udev I think) in and mounts them.
You can start it yourself from the command line (if you're using a different
window manager than gnome), or have gnome start it for you.

On a side note, if you would like to mount drives manually as a normal user,
and not use sudo, you would use pmount/pumount

# pmount /dev/sda1
or sth
