Despite my trashing of Evolution in another thread, I've found the
calendar to be pretty good. I have not seen the behavior you describe;
have you tried starting "fresh" with an empty calendar? There might be
something messy with the calendar you have.

There's also Sunbird from Mozilla (I am not aware of Ubuntu packages for
it), but it's still under heavy development. Some people have found the
0.2 version (more than a year old) to their liking.

Google calendar is also an option if you can stand the web interface,
aren't offline often, and can do without a to-do list.
