sorry john if i gave you the wrong impression of what needed to be done, u 
dont have to recompile the whole kernel just compile your own modules from 
the source ralink have provided, but todo this u do need all the kernel 
building tools, and headers/sources. I also assumed you had the same firmware 
version as i do h/w: e1 f/w: 5, because thats all they seem to be selling 
these days and that version of the card isnt natively supported at the 
moment. the reason people have vastly different experiences between with the 
same card model number are those hardware/firmware versions that there seem 
to be so many of. if you want assistance or even the modules i've compiled 
(as long as ur running the same kernel ver) let me know.
