Is the scanner connected to a non-powered hub, a powered hub or a direct
connection?
Does the scanner have its own power suply, or does it get power over the
usb cable? (the hp site doesn't want to tell me this!)
Have you tried powering the PC on with the scanner not connected, and then
later connecting it, or vice versa?
What does it say in the file /var/log/messages when you connect the sanner
- anything about USB?
Does usb work when X isn't running?
