Packages ! get the current ones???

well, it's true that the packages in synaptic are frequently not the
newest ones. to install the freshest version, you would have to find
the website for the program, and download their releases, which for the
most part come in source tar.gz form. for a tutorial on how to install
these (as well as just about all other methods of software installation
on ubuntu), check out this link:
