If you are not wed to BIND, you might take a look at djbdns (available 
via the djbdns-installer package in Debian and Ubuntu):  It is less 
resource hungry and easier to configure, but, to be fair, it is not 
intended as a drop-in clone for BIND and there are objections to its 
licensing.
