You're placing the cart before the horse.  It isn't "Linux will get
better when we get more people" but rather "we will get more people when
Linux gets better".  Standards -- verifiable and enforced! -- are a key
step to get commercial support of varying kinds (devices, online support
from ISPs, etc.).  As is design for usability rather than mere
functionality.  Lots of headway has been made on this -- but Linux still
falls short of even Windows 95 in most usability regards.
