I completely understand the frustration... try wasting 3 months... on a
modem as easy to configure as alsa-enabled slmodem...

any modem with a serial connection is supposed to work. you could also

second that... they (winmodems) are extremely hard to configure and
depend on patience and luck. 



still, they are configurable, in some instances. 



as a last resort, try going to a local pc store and asking for a
hardware modem (also called hardmodem). ebay may also be a good
resource as well. 



need to put more pressure on the manufacturers.
