Ahhhh... you made me go through all that again just in case... Result:
after a lot of work, running scripts and checking the minute details of
the resulting data files is that I have to buy a US$ 20 Linuxant driver
which actually isn't available for my kernel version. (Dapper)
I think that's pretty close to "It doesn't work with Ubuntu".
Things that "Do work with Ubuntu" typically 'just work', are installed
by default or as a very worst case can be easily installed using
Synaptic. All this crap is just FAR more than I'm willing to handle.
(Even though I just tried again to make sure..) Wasting an hour to fail
to get a modem to work..
(Conexant HSF modem, built into my laptop)

Well I can't even FIND legacy hardware modems on sale anymore, (other
than perhaps second hand dump-markets) so chances are it's a Winmodem.

Sorry, I just get VERY frustrated when I can't get very basic and
absolutely essential hardware to work, especially on an operating system
that 'just works' for everything else.
