Clear the computer's memory?

Hmmm... I remember that now from my first Linux/Unix class, though not 
all the details. I think that Linux tries to guess what I might need 
next and puts it in memory. Is that right?

Is there a way to find out how much memory is actually in use by some 
application instead of Linux guessing what I might need?
