DV Imac Volume Control, Breezy

I recently installed PPC Breezy on an old Imac DV, and even when
starved of RAM (128 MB), it works pretty well.
The only problem right now is that I can't control the sound volume
very well.
The menubar sound control is X-ed out. The XMMS volume control does
nothing. In the Volume Control program the Alsa "PC Speaker" slider
will only boost volume, but at zero there is still plenty of sound.
If I switch the Volume Control program to OSS Mixer the "Speaker"
slider will let me boost volume or turn it to zero, but there is a big
jump from zero to minimum.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
-kb, the Kent who might have to get more RAM and a newer (quieter)
disk for this nice little beast.
P.S. Another (easy?) question: How can I make the command keys be alt
instead of option? There is only one option key on this keyboard...
