I honestly don't care much about backward compatibility.  I do care about
being able to write code for one JVM and have it run on multiple
platforms.  I think that this feature is at risk with a GPL'd Java.  

It is unfortunate that this is true, but Microsoft has a lot of money to
spend promoting an incompatible version, and they've already shown an
interest in doing so.
