Thinkpad numeric keypad doesn't do numbers

I have a Thinkpad R50e that I'm running Breezy Badger Ubuntu on. It
has a laptop keyboard without a separate keypad, but when you do
numlock, some of the ordinary keys are supposed to be a keypad. This
isn't working correctly. When I press numlock, most of the keypad
keys don't work at all in unshifted mode. In shifted mode, they do
produce the numbers, but of course, the point of a keypad is to be
able to enter numbers with only one hand.
I assume this is some configuration file screwed up, which I could fix
if I could find it. Or possibly that I should be using a different
keyboard from the one I have defined. I have tried several keyboards
from the System => Preferences => Keyboard screen, and none of them
has worked right.
