I had five days of logging & no rotation. I finally just mv'd the file &
restarted the daemon. I have tried manually adding /var/log/messages to the
conf file & was rewarded w/'no such group'. Well... the btmp group is
recognized (and there) and I was looking right at /var/log/messages.
Finally, at 0735 I saw the same messages one sees when booting --right on my
desktop-- and checked the logs:

Still no log rotation. The first 'restart' was after my manual rotation; the
2nd was after the cron.daily logrotate was [perhaps] executed. I don't
really call that execution.
