The original poster seems new to this new-fangled Linux thing, so I'd 
recommend he also installs WineTools to make the process easier. I 
don't have the URL handy but there's a link to it from the download 
page at www.winehq.com

Michael, what are the windows programs you want to run? If it's games, 
it's probably worth the price to use Cedega instead of Wine. Cedega 
is a customized version of Wine that has been highly optimized for 
games. It's not free though, you are expected to pay a (small) fee 
for it
